We also can custom-make pieces to your specifications by request. Green and Clean

Recently the news has reported more instances of violence, mistreatment of workers and environmental destruction surrounding the mining of precious metals and gems in South Africa and at other global mining sites. At Heart of Gold Jewelers we do all that we can to insure that none of the materials used in the beautiful pieces we make are associated with violence or harm to the environment. Please ask us for details next time you drop by. We have developed a network of suppliers that have this same concern.

One of the very best ways to insure that your new jewelry is "green" and conflict-free is to restore or re-purpose old pieces that may have been lying unused or passed down in your family. Our favorite kind of project is to take old neglected pieces and turn them into something new and exciting. If you have any questions about how we might do this for you please contact us.

Clean Diamonds

Over the past decade or so there has been a good bit of media interest in what have come to be called "conflict diamonds" or "blood diamonds". This has to do with the fact that diamond mining and trading have been used as a tool in violent conflict and human torture in Africa and other parts of the world. If you have followed this you will be aware that there is now an international agreement called the Kimberley Process. This agreement is designed to insure that diamonds that have been involved with conflict will be kept out of the international trading pipeline. Most all nations, diamond wholesalers and retailers have signed on to the Kimberley agreement. There are some concerns that there may be holes in the Kimberley Process that allows diamonds that may have been involved in conflict to enter the system. This has moved some people to avoid all diamonds for fear that they may be participating in a system that brings about human suffering. Fortunately, Canada has recently become a good source for diamonds. Many beautiful diamonds are being found in the NorthWest territories area. The mining companies are also partnering with the Indigenous people of the area (First Nations diamond cutters)to do some of the cutting so these stones never leave North America and get mixed with any diamonds that may have come from conflict areas. At Heart of Gold Jewelers we don't normally stock many diamonds but we do have connections to provide Canadian conflict-free diamonds on request. Green Gold

You may have noticed that several of the jewelry stores in town are advertising that they are buying "old gold." With sales down due to the recession many jewelers are buying gold to resell and replace some of their lost sales. At Heart of Gold we are not in the business of buying old gold although we are able to reuse your old gold in the making of new pieces for you.
The topic of buying old gold does bring up the whole issue of the recycling of precious metals. Because of their value and their ability to be remelted into a pure state, metals such as gold, silver and platinum were some of the first materials that people recycled. It is possible that some of the gold that is now in your wedding band might have been a part of King Tut’s collection. In recent years it has come to light that the process of mining precious metals from the earth often result in serious environmental problems as well as some human rights issues for the workers. This information has prompted some people to boycott jewelry made from these metals. Many people in the jewelry industry have also responded to the negative aspects of mining. One way is to attempt to pressure the mining companies to clean up their act. But an even more successful response has been to focus on the recycling option for the metals. Several companies have focused on the refining and reprocessing of metals. The leader in this has been Hoover and Strong of Richmond, VA. They now feature their HARMONY metals which are made from 100% recycled material which they refine and reprocess at the most environmentally friendly refining plant in the country. Heart of Gold Jewelers will be using Hoover and Strong for as much of our metal purchases as possible. We will also be sending our metal scraps and filings in to them for recycling. Although we cannot promise that every piece of the metals we use in our jewelry has a perfectly “clean” past we will be doing all we can to accomplish this as part of the “No Dirty Gold” campaign.
